How-To: Samba installation on Debian

Samba is a free implementation of the SMB/CIFS protocol, which allows you file and printer sharing between windows and linux.

Install package:

apt-get install samba

Enter your workgroup name, or leave WORKGROUP if you're not sure and answer 'no' to question about using WINS settings from DHCP (unless you're sure you need that.)

Add a share definition like this to the end of the /etc/samba/smb.conf file:

[data]
path = /data/
create mask = 0755
writable = yes
valid users = user1

Uncomment this line in /etc/samba/smb.conf:

security = user

This will require a system account to log-in to the samba server.

Create samba account for user user1 (example):

smbpasswd -a user1

You can change user password with command:

smbpasswd user1
